The book “Florence Nightingale” by Kitson Jazynka is a historical fiction novel。 Florence is known as the “Lady with the Lamp”。 Florence was a person that wanted to help others whether it was a human or an animal。 Back when she wanted to help people not many Women were nurses。 Florence’s parents did not like the idea of her being a nurse。 Since her family was a wealthy family they wanted her to pursue in the parent’s footsteps but Florence didn’t want to be like the。 Since Florence was a wealthy The book “Florence Nightingale” by Kitson Jazynka is a historical fiction novel。 Florence is known as the “Lady with the Lamp”。 Florence was a person that wanted to help others whether it was a human or an animal。 Back when she wanted to help people not many Women were nurses。 Florence’s parents did not like the idea of her being a nurse。 Since her family was a wealthy family they wanted her to pursue in the parent’s footsteps but Florence didn’t want to be like the。 Since Florence was a wealthy person as it is it didn’t have that much of an impact but she wouldn’t be making a lot of money in general because she is a girl and would get paid less then the men would。 This book mainly takes place outside or in hospitals。 The reason I say this is because she helped whoever and whenever people needed help。 It mainly takes place in a hospital because she was a nurse。 And she also helped clean up hospitals so they would be able to use and so that patients wouldn’t get a deeper infection because of how gross the hospitals were。 It takes place outside because she had to travel to different places in order to help others around the world and not just in her area。 My favorite part about this book was when Florences want on a mission to go to Kaiserswerth without her parent’s permission。 The text states, “They were unhappy she’d gone to Kaiserswerth without permission。” This shows that she actually went and didn’t care about their opinion。 The reason I say this is my favorite part is that she had the courage to go。 Her parents are the type of parents that want her to pursue what she loves。 They want her to do what any typical Woman at her age would do。 She also doesn’t have a husband and at her age and she is supposed to so that means when she gets older she won’t get a husband and that’s all because she was helping save lives。 I would recommend this book to people who liked to read about what happened a long time ago。 The reason I say this is because people don’t realize the condition that they had to work in compared to today。 People also don’t realize what it was like for Women and how they could only do specific jobs。 Most of the women that tried to do other jobs didn’t make it but Florence did and that is what most people need to realize。 。。。more

So much information! Easy to read for middle school。

The content is solid, and the layout and illustrations in the body of the book, and even the spine, are appealing; however, I feel DK made a mistake with the covers of this new series of biographies--not appealing to children。 They will be drawn to this book for assigned reading。

I read this book to get a feel for the series and decide if these would be a good addition to a school library biography section。 It isn't bad。 There are lots of pictures and details。 What keeps it from a 4 or 5 rating is the lack of good narration。 I would like to have something more than the Who Was series, but honestly, those books tell a much better story with the facts。 I prefer the Sterling Biographies and Matt Christopher biographies as well。 The DK books are fine for kids doing research, I read this book to get a feel for the series and decide if these would be a good addition to a school library biography section。 It isn't bad。 There are lots of pictures and details。 What keeps it from a 4 or 5 rating is the lack of good narration。 I would like to have something more than the Who Was series, but honestly, those books tell a much better story with the facts。 I prefer the Sterling Biographies and Matt Christopher biographies as well。 The DK books are fine for kids doing research, but they will not likely be picked up for independent pursuits。 。。。more

Did she go to the Florence Nightingale Museum in London? Or did she rely on what’s been written about Nightingale already? She acknowledges a consultant at the end of the book but doesn’t state this person’s title or affiliation。 Who was this person and what was their expertise? The reader deserves a note from the author about how she developed the content and ideas for the book plus, in the back matter, a bibliography with primary sources consulted or a list of credits for the quotes。This is the first book in the DK Life Stories series that I’ve read。 Jazynka contributes to multiple series。 Looking forward to reading additional titles by her。 。。。more

This is a children's biography about Florence Nightingale's life。 Big words were explained on the page, plus there was a glossary in the back。 There were some portraits of Flo, but mostly the illustrations were cartoon-like figures。 The book covered her early life all the way to her death。 I liked the text, but I expected better illustrations from a DK Book。I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through Amazon Vine。 This is a children's biography about Florence Nightingale's life。 Big words were explained on the page, plus there was a glossary in the back。 There were some portraits of Flo, but mostly the illustrations were cartoon-like figures。 The book covered her early life all the way to her death。 I liked the text, but I expected better illustrations from a DK Book。I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through Amazon Vine。 。。。more

In this nicely-written and colorfully illustrated book for young adults, Kitson Jazynka discusses Florence Nightingale's early life and education and describes this amazing woman's many accomplishments。 Florence was born in 1820, during the reign of Queen Victoria。 Her affluent family lived in two beautiful homes; had enough servants to ensure that all their needs were met; took numerous trips abroad; and enjoyed social gatherings with their friends。 Mr。 and Mrs。 Nightingale hoped that Florence In this nicely-written and colorfully illustrated book for young adults, Kitson Jazynka discusses Florence Nightingale's early life and education and describes this amazing woman's many accomplishments。 Florence was born in 1820, during the reign of Queen Victoria。 Her affluent family lived in two beautiful homes; had enough servants to ensure that all their needs were met; took numerous trips abroad; and enjoyed social gatherings with their friends。 Mr。 and Mrs。 Nightingale hoped that Florence and her sister, Parthenope, would marry well, but Florence had other ideas。 From an early age, she was curious about the world around her, and was passionate about healing animals as well as people。 Her superior education included the study of languages, science, history, and advanced mathematics。 Although she had a suitor, Ms。 Nightingale chose to pursue nursing and devoted her considerable gifts to this vital profession。 Florence's talents were not limited to nursing, however。 She was also a great communicator, administrator, organizer, and visionary。 Florence wrote monographs, letters, pamphlets, and statistical reports that helped spread the word about the importance of sanitation, compassion, skill, and wholesome food in helping the sick and injured to recover。 She is particularly well-known for her tireless efforts during the Crimean War, and her advocacy for much-needed hospital reform。 She taught others who followed in her footsteps, and soon "Nightingale nurses were requested to start schools all over the world, including Africa, Australia, and America。"This is an enlightening and readable work of non-fiction (which also contains an excellent index, timeline, and glossary) that is appropriate for youngsters in grades seven to nine。 The allusions to soldiers suffering from grisly wounds may make it inappropriate for younger readers who might find some of the contents disturbing。 One of this book's chief strengths is its depiction of a strong-willed female who was considerably ahead of her time。 Instead of concerning herself with society's expectations, Nightingale pursued her calling and became a pioneer in her field。 To this day, Florence Nightingale is an inspiration for women who serve as dedicated research scientists, physicians, physical and occupational therapist, and of course, nurses。 。。。more
